THIS EVIL THING is Michael Mears’ award-winning one-man show coming to Haringey at 19.00 on 22 February 2018, at St Augustine’s Church, Mattison Road, London N4 1BG

As the anniversary of the ending of the First World War approaches, Haringey First World War Peace Forum’s Heritage Lottery Funded project ‘Conscientious Objection Remembered’ presents a one-man play to tell the story of the men who said no to war.

Bertrand Russell, one of the greatest mathematicians of his time, and Bert Brocklesby a young school teacher and Methodist preacher, resisted conscription. What happened to them and to a host of other characters is vividly brought to life in Michael Mears’ highly original piece of dramatised storytelling – partly using verbatim testimonies – while interacting with a multi-layered sound landscape and vivid visual imagery.

Those experiences were not untypical of Haringey’s 350 First World War COs. Michael Mears will bring us the audience the dilemmas, debates, the cruelties and the moralities in what promises to be a breath-taking performance.
