RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am a second year PhD Candidate undertaking research on the social history of Leeds during the First World War. I aim to show what the reactions of society were in wartime Leeds to the conflict and the entire span of problems that it brought, including how the city responded to these over time, and how themes such as class, gender and religion were influential. I aim therefore to create a nuanced study showing the influence of the war upon the city. To effectively compile a comprehensive survey of the city to show the effect the war had on society, both consensus and dissent towards the war in the city at the time will be incorporated. The support for the war, in terms of recruitment to the army and voluntary war work on the home front, will be a special focus, juxtaposed with the evidence of anti-war sentiment, both overt (such as groups who opposed the war, such as the Women’s Peace Crusade) and covert (for example the large number of men who claimed exemption from conscription). I am therefore interested in the social history of the local area, especially that which highlights class divisions and puts the spotlight on women’s role in history.
